This blog is for the Moron's who think we don't need Health Care Reform. I guarantee every person who thinks we don't need it, doesn't have to pay for their own health insurance. Or if they do, they only pay a portion of it. IF they had to pay for all of their Health Care Insurance, they'd be screaming from the rooftops.
Well, I've been screaming from the rooftops. I've written to President Obama. I've written to the NY Times. I've blogged all over the Internet. Let me tell you how the high cost of Medical Insurance has affected my life. First of all let me just say, that because the United States has high medical costs doesn't mean you have good medical care. I've had Lyme Disease for 22 years. I went untreated for 20 years. Now you wonder in a country like ours, how can that be? I even had a photograph of my bite and yet I would have doctors blatlantely tell me, "you don't have Lyme Disease". I've been blown off, brushed aside, and told I was crazy from doctors from Philadelphia to Baltimore. It's no secret that the tests for Lyme Disease are often wrong and when I first got bit in 1987 it wasn't even heard of in the Philadelphia area.
Ok, I'll get off that bandwagon for now...that's another blog. Here's my current dilema. I made the fatal decision of prioritizing paying my $1200.00 a month medical insurance for my husband and myself, and neglecting my mortgage payment. Actually I was juggling the two payments. I was getting good at it. There is NO grace period for Medical Insurance. Remember, they want you to default, because they want to drop you. That is their main agenda. So they do have guideline set forth by the Commonwealth of PA. If you are going to screw around with your payment date, you better know the exact date at which you can push THAT envelope. I had it down to a science. As for my mortgage company, there is more leeway there.
My mortgage company got the short end of the stick. My husband has been self employed as a Contractor for 30 years. This is the first time in those 30 years that he has not been booked up for months in advance. He has only had sketchy work since October. We don't have credit card debt. We are just living hand to mouth. Our biggest expense is Medical Expenses. Medical Insurance, prescription co-pays, hospital co-pays, medical test co-pays, doctors and specialists co-pays. Oh, I forgot to mention, due to 22 years of Lyme, I haven't been able to work for 4 years due to a myriad of medical problems, you know from that great health system we have. I've applied for Social Security Disabiltiy and was turned down. I am awaiting an appeal.
As stupid middle class, or let me re-phrase that, lower middle class white people, we were brought up to always have Medical Insurance so we "don't lose the house". Always, hanging over our heads like the sword of Damacles was "you are going to lose the house if you end up in the hospital and you don't have insurance". Yeah, no shit. Guess what? I am "losing the house, because I DO have Medical Insurance". How's that for irony?
I hope someone from Mr. Obama's White House reads this. I hope someone from The Washington Post or the New York Times or even the Philadelphia Inquirer, reads this. I have written to so many newspapers, blogs, forums and just about anything I could to bring attention to my plight. We can't be the only people that this is affecting. Actually, I know we aren't. As other small business people that we know are in the same situation. They are just trying to make a living and stay in business. Oftentimes the husband and wife work together, so they pay for their insurance themselves. We've cashed out in the last two years our 401k's, IRA's, tapped into every Life Insurance Policy, sold cemetary lots and everything that wasn't nailed down, just to try to pay our bills and keep our house. Why, oh.....so we could pay $1,200.oo a month for shitty health insurance. Because due to our pre-existing conditions and our advancing age, no other insurance company in the state will take us. That's something that the idiots in Congress need to learn a little more about. You cannot change companies. You are stuck with what you have until you can qualify for Medicare. Who can guarantee that Medicare will even be available to us when we reach or even live to be age 65? See.....I told you I was pissed.
